According to the recall notice, the fault could cause the battery management software to fail in the event of a short circuit, leading to a potential fire.
Mini has recalled 1408 examples of its 2020-2023 Mini Cooper SE electric hatch, citing a potential fault with the high-voltage battery management software.
The affected vehicles are stamped 2020 to 2023 (F56 Generation) models, but may have been sold at a later date.
The recall notice, lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, says:
“The high-voltage battery management software has insufficient protections for short circuit events. As a result, if a short circuit occurs it could lead to a vehicle fire whilst driving or parked.
“A vehicle fire could increase the risk of serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, and bystanders, and/or damage to property.”

Mini advises that owners of affected vehicles should contact their preferred authorised Mini dealer to update the vehicle’s software, free of charge.
The notice states that all vehicles will require an urgent software update that includes a diagnostic function that reliably detects a battery malfunction and discharges the high-voltage battery to a level where a fire risk is not possible.
