BMW’s 2 Series Gran Coupe has received a heavy facelift with an updated design, new technology, and tweaked engines.

The 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has debuted ahead of its Australian launch early next year.
While BMW refers to the latest 2 Series Gran Coupe – codenamed ‘F74’ – as a new-generation car, it is a heavily updated version of its ‘F44’ predecessor unveiled five years ago.
It follows a similar revision to the related 1 Series hatch revealed in mid-2024, with both models closer than before with an identical front end and dashboard.
Revisions applied to the vehicle include a redesigned interior with larger screens running updated software, tweaked engines and reworked suspension.
Leather is no longer used in the cabin – except for the steering wheel – while there’s also a slimmer gear selector, and the rotary controller for the infotainment system has been removed in favour of touch controls.
The iDrive 9 system in the new 2 Series Gran Coupe is adopted from the X1 and X2 SUVs with support for over-the-air software updates, a built-in voice assistant, downloadable music and video streaming apps, and support for playing games when the vehicle is parked in Europe and the US.
Measuring 4546mm long, 1800mm wide and 1445mm tall, with a 2670mm wheelbase, the new model is 20mm longer, no wider and 25mm taller than before with an unchanged wheelbase.
Like the new 1 Series and X3, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is the next petrol-powered BMW vehicle to drop the ‘i’ from its model badges, with the letter – previously standing for fuel injection – to be reserved for electric BMWs.
In Australia, the model will be offered in 218 Gran Coupe – replacing the outgoing 220i Gran Coupe entry model – and M235 Gran Coupe forms, matching the engine line-up of the 1 Series.
Priced from $58,800 before on-road costs – a $6400 reduction over the 220i – the 218 Gran Coupe includes new features such as a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, matrix LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, heated front seats, and adaptive suspension.
However the switch from the 220i to the 218 for the entry point into the 2 Series Gran Coupe brings a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine outputting 115kW and 230Nm instead of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo with 141kW and 280Nm.
An equivalent BMW 218i Gran Coupe was last offered in Australia in 2023 at $62,100 before on-road costs.
The all-wheel-drive M235 Gran Coupe flagship model has an updated version of the car’s 2.0-litre turbo with 233kW and 400Nm – an 8kW increase – for a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 4.9 seconds, identical to before.
It is now paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission replacing the eight-speed torque-converter automatic in the outgoing M235i Gran Coupe.
Over the 218, the M235 gains 19-inch alloy wheels, black contrast roof, a heated steering wheel, a Harman Kardon audio system, a panoramic sunroof, and additional active safety features including lane-keep assist, lane-centring assist, front cross-traffic alert, and collision evasion assistant.
The 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is due in Australian showrooms between January and March next year.
