Afrobeats Artists Lazy – Flavour –

Date:

Nigerian highlife singer Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour, has echoed Jamaican reggae icon Buju Banton’s criticism of Afrobeats music, agreeing that it lacks depth.

Recall that Banton sparked controversy by describing Afrobeats music as “f*ckery” in an interview, claiming it had no substance and would eventually fade away.

Reacting on a recent episode of the ‘In My Opinion’ podcast, Flavour supported Banton’s view, stating that Afrobeats lacks depth because its artists are lazy.

“I understand what Buju Banton is trying to say. Kids of today [present crop of Afrobeats artists] don’t want stress; they just want to vibe,” he lamented. “Maybe Buju Banton is trying to awaken our spirit.”

Flavour also distanced himself from the Afrobeats genre, clarifying that he is a highlife artist and not an Afrobeats artist. He criticized the Western media for categorizing all African artists under the Afrobeats genre.
