China and Brazil lighting links across the Pacific

The Belo Monte Hydroelectric Station is a joint venture between Brazil and China. At present, it generates some 40 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. But the question is, how is it possible for a facility buried deep in the remotest rainforest to power bustling cities 2,500 kilometers away?
