China’s BeiDou to unmask the American F-22 and F-35 fighters

The F-22 Raptor is widely regarded as one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world, a symbol of American air superiority. Its cutting-edge stealth technology allows it to operate in enemy territory with minimal risk of detection. Stealth is a key factor that gives the F-22 and its sibling, the F-35 Lightning II, an edge over adversaries. These aircraft have been designed to avoid radar detection by minimizing their radar cross-section, making them nearly invisible to conventional radar systems.

However, recent developments from China may challenge this technological advantage. Chinese researchers have made significant strides in developing methods to detect stealth aircraft, potentially neutralizing one of the U.S. military’s core capabilities. At the center of these advancements is China’s BeiDou satellite navigation system, which has been adapted to detect the presence of stealth fighters by analyzing how BeiDou signals interact with the aircraft.

When BeiDou’s signals encounter a stealth aircraft like the F-22, the signal is disrupted and scattered. This scattering produces a unique echo in the radio frequency spectrum, which Chinese scientists claim to have deciphered. Using advanced algorithms, they are reportedly able to determine the aircraft’s position by analyzing the specific radio signal disturbances. According to reports, this method has already been tested in simulations and could potentially work against both the F-22 and the F-35.

This approach was detailed in a peer-reviewed study published by the National University of Defense Technology in China, and it builds on earlier experiments with detecting small drones. In one such experiment, scientists successfully tracked a small DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone by analyzing how radio signals from SpaceX’s Starlink satellites were scattered by the drone, despite its size and low radar profile. This raises the possibility of using similar techniques to track stealth aircraft, which are designed to have a similarly low radar cross-section.

Traditional radar systems work by emitting beams that reflect off objects, with larger objects returning more detectable signals. Stealth aircraft are designed to scatter these beams, reflecting as little signal as possible to evade detection. But with China’s new method, based on satellite signal analysis rather than conventional radar beams, even low radar cross-section aircraft like the F-22 could be vulnerable.

What makes this technology particularly concerning is its cost-effectiveness and flexibility. According to Chinese researchers, this method doesn’t rely on traditional radar systems, which are expensive and typically limited to powerful nations.

Instead, by using BeiDou signals or those from other satellite constellations like GPS, Galileo, or GLONASS, it provides a more affordable alternative that could be deployed in smaller nations that lack advanced radar systems. This could drastically change the dynamics of stealth warfare, making U.S. stealth aircraft more vulnerable in regions where they have traditionally operated with impunity.

The radar system based on BeiDou can also be deployed with simple receiving antennas, making it easy to install in various locations and difficult to detect. If BeiDou were to be jammed, the system could switch to other satellite signals, ensuring continuous operation. This adaptability, combined with the relatively low cost of the technology, could make anti-stealth systems much more accessible to countries that currently lack the infrastructure to defend against stealth aircraft.

One of the challenges Chinese scientists have faced is the weakness of the refracted signals when they reach the ground, as these signals are often overwhelmed by interference from buildings, trees, and other objects. Traditionally, passive radar systems have required multiple antennas to filter out this noise.

However, the Chinese team has proposed a “blind detection” method that uses a single antenna, significantly reducing both the complexity and cost of the system. This breakthrough was achieved by refining an algorithm originally developed in the 1990s by Goran Zivanovic, a Yugoslav computer scientist whose work on detecting hidden cyclic frequencies in electromagnetic signals went largely unnoticed in the West but has been widely respected and applied in China.

The implications of this development extend beyond just stealth detection. In addition to satellite-based detection systems, China is working on a variety of other methods to track stealth aircraft. These include the use of long-wave signals that bounce off the ionosphere, radiation emitted by commercial satellites, and electromagnetic signals generated by U.S. military bases. Some Chinese commercial satellites, aided by artificial intelligence, have even reportedly tracked F-22 jets flying through clouds. This convergence of technologies could give China a significant advantage in future aerial combat scenarios.

The U.S. is not standing still in response to these advancements. In the face of China’s rapidly improving military technology, the Pentagon has begun shifting its strategy in the Asia-Pacific region. Over 10,000 U.S. troops have been relocated from Japan to bases in Guam and Hawaii, farther from China’s reach. Additionally, there has been a growing interest in the use of drones over traditional manned aircraft, as drones could potentially provide a more cost-effective and less vulnerable alternative to stealth jets in conflicts with technologically sophisticated adversaries.

China’s progress in stealth detection underscores the broader competition between the U.S. and China in the realm of military technology. While the F-22 and F-35 represent the pinnacle of American aerospace engineering, China’s innovations in anti-stealth technology could narrow the gap. If successful, these developments may force the U.S. to rethink how it employs stealth technology and could reshape the future of air combat in the Pacific region.
