Sports betting is a big industry these days, and, at least in some ways, it’s a lot like the stock market — a lot of what happens there is based on speculation and projection.

It’s obviously an inexact science, but some are bold enough to go against the grain and make big bets that something that seems unlikely will take place.

Sports commentator Chris Russo, who rose to fame on the radio show “Mike and the Mad Dog” in New York and New Jersey, revealed on “The Dan Patrick Show” that he will be betting $10,000 that the New York Jets will come in over their over/under of 9.5 wins this season.

There was a lot of hype surrounding the Jets going into last season after they traded for future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but Rodgers tore his Achilles on their first offensive series of the season, and just like that, the balloon popped.

Now, the hype has been regenerated, and New York seems to have an even stronger cast around Rodgers.

They acquired wide receiver Mike Williams, who is a reliable target in red zone situations, while also bringing in eight-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Tyron Smith to address their weak offensive line.

But it always seems like the team has some sort of bad luck that prevents it from reaching its potential, and that is the huge risk Russo is taking with his money.

On the other hand, if the universe cooperates for once, the Jets should have a good chance of not only winning at least 10 games but of getting to the playoffs and doing some damage there.
