Conor McGregor details injury that nixed Michael Chandler fight

Date:

Eight days ago, the UFC removed its planned UFC 303 main event between Conor McGregor (22-6) and Michael Chandler (23-8)  and replaced it with a light heavyweight title rematch featuring Alex Pereira (10-2) and Jiri Prochazka (30-4-1). UFC president Dana White cited an injury to McGregor as the reason for pulling the fight.

For a week, no firm news about McGregor surfaced, drawing natural speculation about what prompted the postponement.

The 35-year-old Irishman debunked those questions in an Instagram post on Friday. He explained that he suffered a toe injury while training and that forced him to withdraw.

“We had a lapse in concentration and engaged in a training session without wearing the full protective gear and I hit the toe off the elbow and broke the toe clean,” McGregor wrote. “It needs a few weeks that’s it. I couldn’t justify to my team, or fans, that I make the walk hindered again. That walk has been seen.”

In addition to McGregor’s detailed explanation of how the injury happened, he shared photos of his injured toe as well as an x-ray with Ariel Helwani of The MMA Hour.
