Davante Adams should avoid Jets after firing of HC Robert Saleh

Date:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently reported the Jets and New Orleans Saints are Adams’ preferred landing spots. He should consider crossing the Jets off his wish list, though.

Saleh wasn’t brilliant in four seasons with the Jets, going 20-36 in 56 regular-season games. Of course, few coaches have thrived in New York since owner Woody Johnson bought the team in January 2000.

During Johnson’s tenure, the Jets have had more HCs (seven) than playoff wins (six). Additionally, they haven’t made the postseason since 2010, the longest active drought in the NFL.

In April 2023, the Jets acquired Rodgers, 40, to elevate the franchise. But the former Green Bay Packers star has looked like he’s declining through his first five starts this season.

Rodgers — who suffered a season-ending Achilles tear last season — has completed 61% of his passes for 1,093 yards, seven TDs and four interceptions and has posted a below-average 49.1 QBR. He has also been sacked 13 times, tied for 11th in the NFL.

Adams made five Pro Bowls while playing with Rodgers for eight seasons (2014-21) in Green Bay, but he probably can’t salvage the four-time MVP.

“Adams cannot elicit something from Rodgers that simply isn’t there anymore,” wrote ESPN’s Benjamin Solak Tuesday. “Pretty much all the pushing-40 quarterbacks we’ve seen over the past decade had to dramatically change how they play to account for diminishing physical traits. Ben Roethlisberger, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, Matt Ryan … all of those guys had to start throwing the ball earlier and shallower to account for their lack of arm strength and pocket mobility.”

Rodgers’ numbers suggest the same is happening to him. Per Solak, he’s averaging 2.6 seconds to throw and 6.8 air yards per attempt, his lowest figures over his past six seasons.

Adams turns 32 on Dec. 24 and has never played in a Super Bowl. At this point in his career, he should star for a contender (the Buffalo Bills or Baltimore Ravens?), not a dysfunctional organization with an aging player at the most important position.
