Experts are keeping a close eye on China’s third-generation Type 15 light tank, also known as the ZTQ-15. Brandon J. Weichert, a national security analyst and former congressional staffer, warns in his latest report that this Chinese “Black Panther” could pose a serious threat to America. Weichert explains that the Type 15 serves as a testing platform for new technologies and subsystems, ensuring its competitiveness for years to come.
“We mustn’t underestimate China’s growing technical prowess. Instead, we need to understand and respect it and support policies and leaders that will keep the United States ahead. Remember, China today is a formidable near-equal rival to the United States, not the giant North Korea of 50 years ago. They present a challenge that the old Soviet Union never did,” Weichert concluded.
U.S. concerns about the ZTQ-15 focus more on its strategic role than on its direct battlefield impact. This tank could pose a significant challenge for U.S. forces, especially in environments like the Asia-Pacific region, where maneuverability in complex terrains is essential. Its capability to engage enemies in such difficult geographies provides China with a distinct advantage, particularly in areas where the Abrams tank would encounter pronounced limitations.
The Type 15 tank’s performance in mountain warfare and amphibious operations is largely due to its lightweight and high-mobility design. Armed with a 105mm rifled gun that can fire both armor-piercing rounds and anti-tank guided missiles, the Type 15 provides formidable firepower. Its Explosive Reactive Armor [ERA] and modular composite armor offer customized protection against diverse threats, essential for both mountain warfare and coastal operations.
The Chinese Type 15 tank has seen action in real military operations, especially in the challenging high-altitude areas of Tibet and Xinjiang. One of its standout deployments was during the 2020 China-India border standoff along the Line of Actual Control [LAC] in the Himalayas.
During military drills by the People’s Liberation Army [PLA] in these regions, the Type 15 tank was deployed to bolster China’s presence and capabilities amid rising tensions with India. Designed specifically for mountainous terrain and harsh conditions, this tank excelled at altitudes over 4,700 meters, where traditional heavy tanks face operational challenges due to low oxygen levels and extreme cold.
