After an extended hiatus, the Dynasty Warriors series is back with a brand new, revamped entry: Dynasty Warriors Origins. With this entry, Omega Force is returning to the roots of the series, focusing on delivering exhilarating 1 vs. 1000 battles and thrilling spectacles of warfare.

Dynasty Warriors Origins Release Date
The release date for Dynasty Warriors Origins is set for sometime in 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Announced during the May PlayStation State of Play Digital Event, with other platforms confirmed shortly after, this game will be the first new entry in the series since Dynasty Warriors 9, released in 2018.
This long delay is rare for the franchise, but Dynasty Warriors 9 was met with a mixed reception. Returning to the series’ roots is a way to soft-reset the franchise.
Dynasty Warriors Origins Story
According to Omega Force, Dynasty Warriors Origins’ narrative will be told through the eyes of a “nameless hero.” This hero will experience the historical war tale at the heart of the game as chaos and calamity unfold across the Three Kingdoms.
While this isn’t much to go on, it marks a departure from previous games, which had players jump from character to character, playing through their individual stories and chapters. This shift makes us wonder if the number of playable characters has been significantly reduced to focus more on the scale of war and epic battle scenes.
Here’s the official synopsis from Koei:
The story begins a year before the Yellow Turban Rebellion during the dawn of an era of great upheaval, when the protagonist, a martial artist with amnesia, visits a village suffering from famine. There, he meets Zhang Jiao, a long-haired man who offers a helping hand to people, and Guan Yu, a bearded warrior who denounces the injustice of government officials. Together, they fight against the forces of corrupt officials.
Dynasty Warriors Origins Gameplay
We caught a brief glimpse of gameplay in the reveal trailer for Dynasty Warriors Origins. While it mostly showcased story scenes, we did get to see some large-scale action. It appears that these battles are taking place in more linear, custom-built levels and scenes rather than the open expanses of Dynasty Warriors 9, which will likely please many longtime fans of the series.
In addition to the usual melee action, we saw a brief look at the ability to hop on and off your horse amid battle, as well as some of the special moves that the nameless hero and other characters can use during the fight.
Overall, the game looks like a promising refresh for the series. Although it still has some time until release, we are eager to see what else Omega Force has done to return the series to its former glory after Dynasty Warriors 9.
