Final KC-10 Flight Scheduled for 26 September: A Historic Farewell

Date:

For aviation enthusiasts and aircraft spotters, September 26, 2024, marks a bittersweet yet monumental occasion—the final flight of the legendary KC-10 Extender. After more than 40 years of loyal service, this tanker will take to the skies one last time, closing a chapter in U.S. military aviation history.

The KC-10, a workhorse of the U.S. Air Force since its debut in 1981, is renowned for its air-to-air refueling capabilities, supporting global missions and enhancing the U.S. military’s reach. Assigned to the 60th Air Mobility Wing (AMW) at Travis Air Force Base, the aircraft has been an indispensable part of the Air Force’s fleet, but its time has come to pass the torch. As it takes its final bow, the KC-46A Pegasus is poised to step in and continue its mission, bringing with it modern capabilities that will propel tanker operations into the future.

The History of the KC-10

The KC-10 Extender has been an icon of American air power and strategic refueling. Originally developed from the DC-10 commercial airliner, the aircraft boasts impressive fuel storage and cargo capabilities, allowing it to simultaneously carry supplies and refuel multiple aircraft in midair. The ability of the KC-10 to extend the operational range of fighter jets, bombers, and transport aircraft has been critical to U.S. military success worldwide.

Colonel Jay Johnson, commander of the 60th AMW and a seasoned KC-10 flyer, expressed admiration for the aircraft’s remarkable service. “It has been amazing to watch the global impact this aircraft has had,” he said, reflecting on the tanker’s extensive legacy. He also emphasized the excitement for the future, as the KC-46A Pegasus takes over refueling responsibilities.

A Farewell Event for Aviation Fans

On September 25, 2024, Team Travis will offer one final opportunity to tour the KC-10 on the flight line. Open to individuals with base access, this event will allow visitors to walk through the aircraft and experience firsthand what makes this tanker so special.

The following day, on September 26, 2024, a formal ceremony will commemorate the KC-10’s final mission. Taking off from Travis Air Force Base, the KC-10 will embark on its farewell flight, including a special flypast of Long Beach Airport, where it was originally built. This symbolic gesture will offer aircraft enthusiasts one last chance to witness this iconic plane in flight over the city where its journey began more than four decades ago.
