Hyundai’s latest venture into the realm of electric vehicle (EV) racing sees the introduction of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup Car, marking a significant stride in the evolution of EV motorsport. This dedicated racing series, known as the eN1 class, promises an exhilarating blend of sprint races and one-on-one knockout competitions, setting the stage for a thrilling new era in racing.
Drawing inspiration from the successful N1 class, which featured the Elantra (known as the Avante in South Korea), the eN1 series distinguishes itself by welcoming multiple manufacturers and tire vendors, fostering healthy competition and innovation within the electric racing landscape.
The transformation from road-going vehicle to track-ready machine is evident in the extensive modifications undergone by the Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup Car. Shedding nearly 600 pounds compared to its street-legal counterpart, the race-spec Ioniq 5 N boasts a formidable aerodynamic body kit, highlighted by bulging fenders and a commanding rear wing, optimizing performance on the track.
The weight reduction is achieved through strategic measures such as the incorporation of a fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) hood and polycarbonate windows, alongside other enhancements like 18-inch forged wheels clad in slick tires and a stripped-out cabin featuring a single bucket seat.
Despite its leaner physique, the Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup Car doesn’t compromise on safety or performance. Equipped with a full FIA-compliant roll cage, high-performance slick tires, and essential safety features like an asphyxiation fire layer and high-voltage shutoff system, Hyundai ensures that drivers can push the limits with confidence.
Further enhancements include an adjustable suspension system with two-way dampers, a relocated charging port, and the retention of signature features like artificial engine noise generation and the N Grin Boost, providing a brief burst of full power for an exhilarating driving experience.
Underneath its sleek exterior, the Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup Car retains the dual motors capable of delivering a formidable 641 horsepower, coupled with an 84.0-kilowatt-hour battery pack inherited from its road-going counterpart, promising electrifying performance on the track.
Enthusiasts eagerly anticipate witnessing the Ioniq 5 N eN1 Cup Car’s debut at the inaugural round of the 2024 Hyundai N Festival on April 27, where it will showcase its capabilities during an official practice session at the Inje Speedium. With a total of 10 races slated for the year ahead, the eN1 class is poised to captivate audiences and redefine the boundaries of EV racing.
