The RTS genre may be on the verge of making a huge comeback through new releases from indie teams and AA studios with veteran talent. While most eyes are now on games like Godsworn and Stormgate, the promise of more throwbacks to the golden era of real-time strategy can be seen on the horizon, and Immortal: Gates of Pyre might have a big role to play in this resurgence.
Born out of a prototype, named Vanguard, that was created in StarCraft 2’s extensive map editor, Immortal: Gates of Pyre has been in development for around six years and was announced in early 2019 by SunSpear Games.
After several closed alpha tests and countless developer updates, following a successful Kickstarter campaign that’s raised over $150,000, the free-to-play title is now targeting a Steam release sooner rather than later.
That said, the planned release date on Valve’s platform hasn’t been specified yet, which indicates that SunSpear Games is willing to spend as much time as necessary on the game before going public. Even if the RTS genre is currently pretty dead outside of big remasters of older classics, passionate devs are currently facing the most brutal video games market ever, so figuring out the right strategy (pun intended) and rollout while putting the finishing touches on the public build is probably the right call.
The story and worldbuilding shared by SunSpear details a fantasy world that’s waiting for the opening of mysterious Gates that hold ancient secrets. Nations will rush to get their hands on them, and godlike beings called Immortals will harness tremendously destructive powers that might lead entire armies to victory and doom their enemies. Both PvE and PvP will be supported, and the team hopes to entice casual players as well as the more competitive crowd hailing from Blizzard’s RTS classics and other old titles.
It remains to be seen whether Immortal: Gates of Pyre will launch outside of Steam as well, but SunSpear Games received an Epic MegaGrant in 2022, which might confirm an Epic Games Store release too. Stay tuned for more news; we’ll be sharing them as they come.
