The just concluded 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has been marred by widespread failure and controversy. According to the results released by JAMB, a staggering 76% of candidates scored below 200, indicating a significant decline in performance compared to previous years.
Out of a total of 1,989,668 registered candidates, 80,810 were absent, while 1,904,189 sat the examination. However, the results of 64,624 candidates have been withheld due to possible infractions, and are currently under investigation by the board.
In a surprising move, JAMB has also announced that it will not disclose the names of its top scorers for the 2024 UTME, a departure from its usual practice. This decision has raised eyebrows among stakeholders, who are questioning the rationale behind the move.
