In the last league game of Group C, New Zealand beat Papua New Guinea by seven wickets. Lockie Ferguson’s brilliant bowling with Trent Boult and Tim Southee’s two-fer succumbed PNG to a mere 78 runs whereas Devon Conway’s resilient 35 off 32 helped New Zealand with a clinical victory at Trinidad.

‌Following an hour-long rain delay, the dead rubber match between New Zealand and Papua New Guinea commenced with the Kiwis winning the toss and electing to field. This decision quickly paid off as Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson removed Tony Ura and Assad Vala during the powerplay overs. The effects of the rain were evident on the sticky pitch, making it challenging for PNG batsmen to score freely, resulting in a score of 16/2 after seven overs. Despite efforts to stabilize the innings, PNG struggled to accelerate, reaching 35/2 by the end of the 10th over with Sese Bau and Charles Amini at the crease. Ferguson’s dismissal of both Bau and Amini further dented PNG’s batting lineup. Consequently, they were bowled out for a paltry 78 runs in 19.4 overs, highlighting New Zealand’s dominance with the ball in adverse conditions.

New Zealand encountered an early setback when Finn Allen fell to Kabua Morea in the opening over. Morea struck again in the fifth over, dismissing Rachin Ravindra. Despite the early wobbles, Devon Conway and Kane Williamson steadied the ship guiding the Kiwi score to 39/2 after eight overs. With just 40 runs needed from 12 overs, New Zealand gradually approached a clinical victory. However, Conway’s decent knock of 35 off 32 deliveries ended in the 10th over, bringing Daryl Mitchell to the crease. The pair wasted no time and efficiently chased down the target of 79 runs in 12.2 overs. With this win, New Zealand concluded their campaign with a commanding seven-wicket victory.
