South Australian drivers moving from a learner permit to a provisional licence can now take the compulsory Hazard Perception Test online.

Those seeking their P1 Provision Licence still have the option of booking the Hazard Perception Test in-person at a Service SA centre, however it’s expected a large proportion of the 30,000 new drivers annually will now choose to complete the test from home – reducing the pressure on staff and facilities.
The Hazard Perception Test is mandatory for those wanting to upgrade from a learner permit to a P1 Provisional Licence, or for some who are upgrading from overseas licences.
A total of 25 scenarios are provided, simulating real-life situations drivers may encounter – with at least 13 correct answers required to pass.

Taking the test costs $35, however participants can re-sit the test multiple times online within a 12-month period.
According to the South Australian Government, more than 99 per cent of new drivers now take the initial ‘myLs’ test for their learner’s permit online, since the option was introduced in 2021.
New South Wales introduced its Driver Knowledge Test – required to obtain a learner driver licence – in July 2024, while Victoria began allowing testing for a learner permit online in August 2021.
In July 2024, South Australia became the first Australian state to introduce a special driver licence for ‘ultra high-powered vehicles’, with an online test costing $61.
