A special edition model to mark the 30th anniversary of the legendary WRX for New Zealand adds a manual to the range, and while it won’t be offered here it’ll be familiar to Australian WRX fans.
The Subaru WRX Todoroki has been announced for New Zealand as a limited-edition version of the brand’s legendary performance model made famous in the World Rally Championship.
Only 10 examples of the WRX Todoroki sedan will be offered, priced at $NZ64,990 ($AU58,850) before on-road costs and finished exclusively in WR Blue paint (WR standing for World Rally).
It’s near identical to the limited edition 2024 Subaru WRX Club Spec sedan offered in Australia – which saw all 150 sold out days after going on sale in March at $52,590 plus-on-roads alongside an update for the current-generation WRX.
Both the Australian Club Spec and New Zealand Todoroki models commemorate the original WRX’s 1994 on-sale date and offer what looks like the same set of upgrades.
Subaru confirmed to Drive the Todoroki will not be offered in Australia showrooms, also confirming there will be no additional special edition WRXs coming in 2024.
As New Zealand’s equivalent of the Club Spec, each individually numbered WRX Todoroki – Japanese for ‘roar’ – has black badging, 19-inch matt grey alloy wheels with Bridgestone Potenza S007 tyres and a boot lid-mounted rear wing in the same style as the previous flagship WRX STI.
The STI model – which stands for Subaru Tecnica International – is not part of the current global WRX line-up but recent reports suggest it will make a return.
The Todoroki’s mechanical upgrades include revised steering and suspension settings with an upgraded brake package using six-piston Brembos up front and twin-piston rear calipers – again matching Australia’s WRX Club Spec.
There are no changes to the 202kW/350Nm 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, but the Todoroki will use a six-speed manual transmission currently not offered on other WRX models in New Zealand.
Inside, each individually-numbered Todoroki has Recaro front sports seats and comes with a presentation ‘jewellery’ box including a key ring – also numbered to match the vehicle – and an exclusive STI watch.
The WRX – meaning ‘World Rally eXperimental’ – first appeared in Australia in 1994 as a showroom competitor to the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution it also battled in the World Rally Championship at the time.
The current-generation WRX is the car maker’s most popular performance model in Australia ahead of the Subaru BRZ sports car which is twinned with the Toyota GR86 coupe.
