Is James Gunn to blame for Superman and Lois ending? Elizabeth Tulloch gives her thoughts on why the show was brought to an end.
One of the most heartbreaking pieces of news to come out of the DC multiverse in the past few years was the revelation that Superman and Lois would be ending with an abridged final season. The internet immediately turned its eyes to DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran as being behind the decision. However, according to star Elizabeth Tulloch, it was a confluence of factors that led to cancellation.
“We went into this thinking we were gonna go seven seasons,” Tulloch told The Sackhoff Show in a recent chat. “That’s what we were told, so it was shocking that everything happened. It was almost like a triple whammy, to be honest.”
“People keep putting the blame on Gunn and Safran, but the reality is The CW was sold to Nexstar, Warner Bros. had a new head in David Zaslav, and then also DC Comics had new heads. It felt like there was a lot of vitriol aimed at James Gunn and Peter Safran, and at the end of the day, it’s like, if you’re a Superman fan, be stoked about the movie and trust in his vision. Because everything I think Gunn has directed has been great, and I think it’s going to be great.”
It’s certainly true that Warner Bros. Discover has gone through a massive upheaval in the last few years, along with ever-evolving challenges hitting their DC films. So while James Gunn is the poster child for the studio at the moment, Elizabeth Tulloch is right regarding his role in the cancellation of Superman and Lois. His hiring may have been a factor, but it was far from the final axe swing.
Elizabeth Tulloch Reflects On Superman And Lois
Fans aren’t the only ones bummed about the cancellation of Superman and Lois. Following her words about James Gunn, Elizabeth Tulloch expressed her disappointment that the show’s life ended up getting cut short. However, she’s incredibly excited to see where the DC multiverse takes its most iconic couple heading into the future.
“Yes, I’m bummed, but I also didn’t go into playing Lois Lane thinking, ‘Well, I’m going to be the last Lois Lane in history.’ You know that at some point, you got to pass the baton to the next one, and that happened a little earlier than I expected, but I think Rachel Brosnahan’s going to be great. David Corenswet’s going to be a great Superman. It’s time to pass the baton.”
It’s good to hear that Elizabeth Tulloch has high hopes for James Gunn’s take on the iconic characters. While this may be a bittersweet goodbye to Superman and Lois, it’s one of the few times that DC has actually allowed the Man of Steel to go out on his own terms. Which, if nothing else, goes to show how beloved the show is to stand above corporate interests.
