The Most Thoughtful Way to Gift a Book in the Military

Date:

On an upcoming episode of the From the Green Notebook Podcast, Joe asks former SEAL and best-selling author Jack Carr about what book played a large role in influencing him as a leader during his time in uniform.

Jack shared that Once an Eagle by Anton Myrer played a crucial role in shaping his leadership perspective. The book follows the career of Sam Damon, a professional soldier dedicated to duty and honor, juxtaposed against the career of his antagonist, Courtney Massengale, who is driven by ambition and political acumen. Spanning multiple wars, the book explores the complexities of leadership, integrity, and the human dynamic of conflict.

He then described a unique way he gifts the book to younger leaders:

I’d write a letter, and put it in the beginning of the book in an envelope, and I set the tone, like, why am I giving them this book.

And then I say, there’s another letter at the end, and that one is in an envelope as well, but it’s sealed, and you can only read that letter when you’re done with the book.

The second letter contained Jack’s reflections on the book. This added touch allowed Jack to share his more experienced perspectives, which may differ from those of a newer member of the Profession of Arms who reads the same book

By sealing his thoughts, Jack ensured that he did not influence the reader’s views, enabling them to develop their own insights.

Next time you give a book, consider taking a few minutes to write two letters: one to explain why you’re gifting the book, and the second to share your reflections. This thoughtful approach can create a deeper, more personal connection to the gift and continue the mentoring process long after the book was given.

Listen to From the Green Notebook for lessons from leaders, authors, athletes, and coaches and make sure you pick up Jack’s newest book, Red Sky Mourning, Book #7 in the Terminal List Series.
