The Penguin Season 2 chances are looking very, very good according to The Batman director Matt Reeves. While the critically-acclaimed superhero universe spreads its wings with the Colin Farrell-led HBO drama, more is well on its way from the cable network. Not only are several spinoffs in the works, but fans could be treated to another season of The Penguin. Obviously, that’s if Farrell is willing to put on a heavy dose of makeup and bodysuit again for the physically-demanding role.
In an interview with The Wrap, Reeves discussed everything regarding the future of The Batman epic crime saga. Although a new season has not been greenlit, nor is it clear if a story is being developed, it seems HBO and co. are keen on capitalizing on the success of The Penguin. Reeves revealed that he is already in talks with the network about a follow-up season, teasing that Season 2 won’t be the only thing coming from The Batman universe on the small screen.
“I can tell you this, we would love to be able to do more. But I can also say that we are already talking to HBO about [more]. The opportunity of being able to then on HBO, go and explore characters that wouldn’t be able to have that kind of real estate creatively, as we were able to do with Oz, that is something that we are talking to HBO about. They’re very excited about that idea. That’s something that we really, really hope we’re going to be able to do.”
Of course, the next spinoffs from The Batman universe could be up first if The Penguin gets an official Season 2 announcement. It’s been said that although it’s not necessary to watch the film, starring Robert Pattinson, to understand the HBO supervilian show, it connects directly to the events of The Batman Part II. That means that while we should get a Season 2 announcement sooner rather than later, the series could take a while to arrive back on HBO after the highly-anticipated movie sequel comes to theaters in 2026.
Does The Penguin Need Another Season?
Obviously, a few episodes out from the finale, it’s hard to tell if the Penguin’s storyline leaves enough on the table for Season 2. It has been clear that Reeves and co. are not willing to do anything unless they put a lot of time and thought into it (the now-cancelled Arkham show is a good example), so the future of The Penguin could very well depend on whether there is a real story to tell. The latest episode has set up an inevitable confrontation between Oz Cobb and Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti), but it seems that their shared journey could continue for more seasons.

Oz Cobb’s future in The Batman universe is not yet clear, but it’s quite safe to say that if anyone makes it out of his own show alive, it will be the iconic DC Comics villain. Still, the events of the rest of The Penguin could have major consequences that leak out into The Batman Part II. In many ways, Farrell’s character has still not become the peak version of the character from the source material. The Penguin serves as an origin story for his rise in the Gotham underworld, into someone much more than just a lackey for the Falcone criminal empire. Could a Season 2 see the character at the height of his powers? Or will his story end in The Batman sequel? Fans will have to stay tuned to find out.
