During 2025, around 2.5 million owners around the world will get the upgrade to their Volvo cars built as early as 2020, the Swedish car marker has said.
Volvo has revealed its new infotainment system, which will be rolled out over-the-air to models as old as 2020 after first appearing in its EX30 and EX90 electric SUVs.
The update, which will also appear in the refreshed XC90, will be available on all Volvos compatible with an Android-based operating system built in 2020 or later – which includes; the C40, XC40, EC40, S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, XC60, S90, V90, V90 Cross Country and XC90.
Volvo will be sending out the updates over the course of next year, with around 2.5 million vehicles expected to receive it worldwide.
According to the car maker, it is “one of the most comprehensive infotainment updates by any car maker to date”.
The new system is still based on Google’s Android operating system, but is understood to be simpler to use than the previous one and makes accessing frequently used apps – such as maps, music and phone calls – much easier.
“Our new-generation user experience will deliver a significant improvement in customer experience and is an important step in our journey to deliver human-centric technology solutions to our customers,” said Erik Severinson, Chief Product and Strategy Officer at Volvo Cars.
“We’ll continuously and seamlessly adapt the user experience to match the needs of our customers through new and enhanced features that are delivered through over-the-air updates, to improve your car – and your experience – over time.”
As well as putting commonly-used apps on the home screen, Volvo has added a contextual bar – which changes what you see according to the situation and displays your most recently used apps.
While driving at low speeds, the icon for outside cameras appears to help with manoeuvring in tight spaces, while drive modes have also been put on the home screen to allow plug-in hybrid users to switch to electric power only more easily.
Earlier this week Volvo revealed its second styling update to the XC90 SUV in 10 years, helping to keep it fresh among its growing range of electric siblings.
During the same presentation, it also teased images for an upcoming new electric model called the ES90, and announced it was walking back on plans to go all-electric by 2030.
