Warcana boldly mixes base defense and deck-building,

Date:

Things continue to heat up on the front of real-time strategy titles coming out in the near future, and 1000 Orks’ Warcana, published by Team17, is planning to put an attractive twist on the base defense subgenre.

Set in a fantasy setting, Warcana blends RTS base defense systems with deck-building mechanics. As a magician, you must push back unrelenting attacks while amassing your armies to strike back.

A single-player campaign is at the center of the experience, but 1000 Orks makes it sound like the main goal behind Warcana was to create a nerve-wracking and unique RTS experience to enjoy as a battle royale of sorts “with up to 30 other players.” All cards also have their own tech trees, so it’s safe to guess plenty of different builds can be put together, and that may be encouraged if you choose to take the fight online.

For those of you who would like to focus on the single-player side of the game above all else, it appears that Warcana isn’t rushing anyone to the multiplayer component, as the campaign features over 30 scenarios. Moreover, an in-game level editor will let players create their own scenarios. It remains to be seen how everything will come together in the end, but Steam Workshop support has been confirmed too.

When does Warcana release on PC?

The game will launch on August 15 exclusively on Steam (other PC platforms haven’t been confirmed yet), and Team17 and 1000 Orks have jointly announced a demo is available from now, July 23, until next week. According to the press release, the just-released demo includes “access to some brand-new features and game modes including Battle Royale, Stream Sniper, Deckbuilding and Smite Ability.”

The demo provides access to the 30-player Battle Royale mode, with the Stream Sniper variation allowing hosts to set special conditions and game modifiers to spice things up.

Moreover, new devotions have been added to the deck-builder. All in all, it looks like the perfect opportunity to properly experience the brand-new game ahead of its launch in less than a month.
