The Atlanta Braves have had some great pitchers over the past 30 years. But the one thing those pitchers have not done during that stretch is throw a no-hitter. They came one out away on Saturday afternoon against the New York Mets, before J.D. Martinez hit an opposite-field home run off of Raisel Iglesias to spoil it.
The Braves still were able to hold on and win the game 4-1. Here is a look at Martinez’s home run to spoil it.
The last Braves pitcher to throw a no-hitter was Kent Mercker on April 8, 1994, against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Iglesias was the third Braves pitcher to take the mound on Saturday after Max Fried started the game and went seven innings and Joe Jimenez pitched the eighth inning.
Fried did walk three batters in his seven innings while running his pitch count up to 109, resulting in him getting removed.
Jimenez walked two batters in his one inning of work.
Cleveland and Toronto are the only two teams in Major League Baseball that have longer no-hitter droughts than Atlanta’s.
Cleveland has not thrown a no-hitter since Len Barker in 1981, while Toronto’s only no-hitter was thrown by Dave Stieb during the 1990 season.
