Woman of Tomorrow Filming Date Revealed by James Gunn at NYCC

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow won’t take flight until 2026, but James Gunn’s “fantastic” new update is a promising one. The co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios showed up at this year’s New York Comic Con (NYCC) and openly praised the work of both the film’s director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Ana Nogueira. Gunn said during his appearance at the comic book convention (per Bleeding Cool):

“The writer and director have been doing a fantastic job spearheading it. We start shooting in January in England. I saw the screen test with Milly Alcock and it’s so exciting. Ana’s pitch about Supergirl was one of the best pitches I’ve ever heard. It’s based on Tom King’s comic Woman Of Tomorrow with some differences in structure, but it has those characters and themes.”

Actress Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) won the highly coveted role of Superman’s (David Corenswet) Kryptonian cousin back in January of this year. Alcock beat out the likes of Emilia Jones (Locke & Key, CODA) and Meg Donnelly (Zombies franchise) to have the right to don Kara Zor-El’s trademark red and blue suit when the film drops in theaters during the summer of 2026.

James Gunn Updates When Superman Trailer Will Drop

It’s been an exciting weekend for fans of the superhero genre, but even before he appeared at the NYCC, James Gunn was already dropping new spoilers for his long-awaited Superman (2025) film. Last Tuesday, he teased fans with a first-look image at the DCU’s live-action version of Krypto. But it was during his visit to the NYCC that Gunn talked about when audiences can expect the very first trailer for Superman. The director said (per Superman Homepage):

“It won’t be too long before we see a trailer, but also it won’t be soon.”

Okay, so the trailer update was pretty cryptic, which is typical of the filmmaker. However, Gunn also took the time to praise his movie’s lead star, David Corenswet, while attending the NYCC. Corenswet, of course, takes up the mantle of the Man of Steel in the DCU. Gunn continued by saying:

“David Corenswet is going to blow people the fu*k away. I don’t think anyone really understands the depth of this guy’s talent dramatically, comedically, physically.”

Superman is only the beginning for Gunn as a director in the DCU. The co-CEO and co-chair of DC Studios has teased that he’ll also helm other projects outside of Supes’ big-screen debut, but he didn’t indicate which titles were on the horizon for him. With so much riding on the success of the Last Son of Krypton’s DCU debut, it makes sense Gunn wouldn’t get too far ahead of himself — thankfully.

The writer of the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has been tasked with also writing a film about the young superhero group.

After all, it wasn’t that long ago that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson teased an epic match-up between his short-lived Black Adam and Henry Cavill’s beloved Superman. Of course, the crossover never came to fruition. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem like Gunn is making that same mistake: putting the cart before the horses.
