Women’s Hundred | Annabel Sutherland’s all-round brilliance dominates Oval Invincibles

Date:

‌The winning streak certainly injected some enthusiasm into the Oval Invincibles as captain Lauren Winfield-Hill won the toss and chose to field first. The decision paid off when Rachel Slater dismissed Superchargers opener Davina Perrin. However, Hollie Armitage and Phoebe Litchfield kept the scoreboard moving with the Superchargers to 35/1. Slater struck again to remove Armitage, bringing Sutherland to the crease. With Litchfield’s assistance, the duo formed a splendid partnership adding 50 runs and taking the score to 83/2 in 60 deliveries. However, Mady Villiers then dismissed Litchfield who scored 44 off 30 balls. The middle order continued to perform well for the Superchargers with Bess Heath and Sutherland adding 42 runs together including a 32-ball fifty from the Australian star. After Heath’s departure at 88, Sutherland continued her aggressive play. Ultimately, her 63 off 40 deliveries helped the Superchargers reach 146/4 at the end of 100 balls.

In response, the Invincibles had a disastrous start with Winfield-Hill and Alice Capsey dismissed within the first ten deliveries. The troubles continued as Marizanne Kapp and Chamari Athapaththu fell within the fourth set, leaving Oval in deep trouble. The situation worsened when Kate Cross removed Villiers in the 22nd delivery, leaving the score at 24/5 in 25 deliveries. However, there was some respite as Paige Scholfield and Amanda-Jade Wellington built a 32-run partnership, bringing the score to 48/5 in 45 deliveries. Just as the pair were gaining momentum, Georgia Wareham claimed the crucial wicket of Scholfield on the 49th delivery. With 92 runs needed off 50 balls and six wickets down, an Oval victory seemed unlikely. Their hopes were further dashed when Sutherland took three wickets in the 13th set, nearly sealing Oval’s defeat. The final blow came when Slater was dismissed by the Aussie all-rounder leading the Superchargers to a comprehensive 82-run victory.
