You Gotta Believe is based on the inspiring true story of one team’s transformational journey from district underdog to taking its place in the Little League record books. After dedicating the season to a teammate’s ailing father, a group of underestimated youth baseball players from Fort Worth, Texas, takes its Cinderella run all the way to the 2002 Little League World Series—culminating in a record-breaking showdown that became an instant ESPN classic.
In the spirit of timeless baseball movies such as The Sandlot and Bad News Bears, You Gotta Believe shines a light on the importance of teamwork and the value of a good laugh, coupled with a healthy dose of self-discipline. The multilayered underdog story is told through the eyes of a child (Cash) grappling with his own father’s illness, in addition to the massive pressure of an upcoming Little League World Series journey. Director Ty Roberts deftly balances an uplifting and humorous script, while juggling the more somber potential loss of a parent and uncertainty both on and off the field. Wilson and Kinnear knock their performances out of the park, as do the spunky cast of young boys, led by endearing newcomer Michael Cash, who plays Robert Ratliff (the son of the ailing father).
