Former chairman of Nigeria Breweries, Asue Ighodalo, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Edo State.
The announcement was made by Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, who chaired the Edo PDP Primary Electoral Committee. Ighodalo secured 577 votes, defeating nine other aspirants in the election held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
Among the aspirants who participated in the election were Omosede Igbinedion, former APC chairman in the state, Anselm Ojezua, Felix Akhabue, Arthur Esene, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, Amb. Martin Uhumoibi, Osaro Onaiwu, and Umoru Hadizat. Edo State Deputy Governor, Phillip Shaibu, received only one vote in the exercise.
Governor Lawal officially declared Ighodalo as the winner of the primary and the PDP candidate for the upcoming governorship election in Edo State.
In his acceptance speech, Ighodalo expressed gratitude to the delegates, his supporters, and the PDP for their support. He also commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for his efforts in laying a solid foundation for the state.
“I am humbled by this victory and I thank the good people of Edo State. In the last four months, I have had the opportunity to connect with them on a deeper level. I am merely a tool in this process, and I promise to be a good tool. With the grace of God, Edo State will continue to progress from where Governor Obaseki left off,” Ighodalo stated.
The PDP now has two candidates for the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, as Deputy Governor Phillip Shaibu had previously emerged as the winner of a parallel primary held at Commercial Avenue in the state capital, where he received 301 votes.
