At 56, activist Shehu Sani has seen the good, the bad and ugly sides of Nigeria. Exactly 30 years ago, he was sentenced to life in prison along with some prominent activists on trumped up charges of treason after a 48-hour trial before a military tribunal.

He reminisces about life under the repressive regime of General Sani Abacha and the return of military despots in West Africa.
